World Of Wacraft Update 6.1.2 Adds WoW Token Subscription To Public Test Realm: Buy Game Time With Gold At Last

Got Gold? Want Some Time? New 'World Of Warcraft' Token Allows You To Pay For Subscription Time With In-game Currency

The recently announced WoW Token will be put into the World of Warcraft's Public Test Realm sometime after today's patch 6.1.2 finishes installing this afternoon.

The tokens are Blizzard's attempt to combat goldfarming by allowing players to trade in-game gold for a 30 day subscription, and real world money for tokens, effectively cutting out the middle man. Shortly after today's patch, players on the America, Latin and Oceania servers can begin buying and selling the tokens. Other servers will gain access to the new currency at a later date.

"When the rollout begins in the Americas game region, players in North America, Latin America, and Oceania will all be able to purchase a WoW Token from the in-game Shop. In the Americas game region, the price of a Token will be $20 USD (or roughly equivalent in each local currency)."

It should be noted that this is not the cheapest way to purchase game-time. A month's subscription - a single, 30 day time period - still costs $14.99. You're paying for convenience when you purchase the token. The in-game gold price has not been revealed, but Blizzard says it will "will be based on several factors, including regional in-game economies, but ultimately our goal is to select a fair and reasonable starting price."

Blizzard will set the price themselves initially and then let the powerful troll deity known as The Economy handle the pricing as time goes on.

To break it down simply, here's a handy chart outlining the basics:

"As a reminder, to help make sure players can trade WoW Tokens confidently, once a Token sells, the seller will receive the amount of gold they were quoted at the time they listed their Token." So your investment is safe.

No word on the actual release date for the WoW Token. Blizzard will monitor how the system works on the PTR and adjust things accordingly.
