'ARK: Survival Evolved' Steam Release Date Locked In, Devs Offer Free Cosmetic Item To 'The Stomping Land' Owners

Developers of recently announced open world multiplayer dinosaur title ARK: Survival Evolved have locked in the June 2 Steam Early Access date and made some new announcements.

The developers at Studio Wildcard are offering an exclusive "Stomped Land Bling Shades" cosmetic accessory for the game's T-Rexes to any player who purchased another indie dinosaur title, The Stomping Lands, as a token of good will and sympathy.

The Stomping Lands has no relation to ARK, but it has perhaps given a reputation to other titles in the genre, or at least has made fans wary. Its creator abruptly jumped ship and progress mysteriously halted after it hit Steam Early Access, leaving players with an unfinished project they had already paid for.

If you haven't seen ARK in action yet, the announcement trailer is below and filled with guns, dinosaurs, open jungles, and some pretty impressive vistas. There are plenty of NPCs roaming about, dinosaur riding, and some pterodactyl flight segments amidst some futuristic-looking technology.

Sound crazy enough? Dinosaurs are fun on their own and a survival sim with only simple tools is also a fun concept, but as Turok has shown us, combining modern (or future) weapons with the giant reptiles is even better. Powered by Unreal Engine 4, ARK: Survival Evolved employs survival and RPG mechanics to allow players to build shelters, research technology, harvest and craft, and develop your character's items and skills.

There are both cooperative and competitive multiplayer elements in the game, which encourages you to "start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover the ARK's true purpose." You can tame pets from a selection of 60 dinosaurs and other beasts, including rides on a quick Raptor, harnessing an angry T-Rex, or a slower journey on a huge Brontosaurus. There are also dragons in some screenshots, because why wouldn't there be?
