Margot Robbie has been tapped by Warner Bros. to play the character of Harley Quinn once again in an unnamed future spinoff movie.
The original film "Suicide Squad" has yet to be shown in theaters this August, but with Warner Bros. tapping Robbie, it seems that the studio is confident enough to plan for the next one. To be clear, this will not be a solo movie for Harley Quinn, although she will be the main character. Instead, several female characters from DC comics will also star in this upcoming "Harley Quinn" spinoff movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Some of the rumored characters joining Quinn include Batgirl or Birds of Prey. Details are very scant as of this writing as the studio is reluctant to release any information on the proposed spinoff movie - even the name of script writer is also being kept secret. However, it is believed that the writer is a woman and was brought in by Robbie, who also happens to be the producer of the spinoff film.
It is said that Robbie was the one who pushed the idea for a "Harley Quinn" spinoff, and since she managed to convince the studio with her proposal, one big factor that won Warner Bros over is Harley Quinn's popularity and female fan base.
Quinn's popularity far outweighs Wonder Woman as her merchandise and books sells more. She was first introduced in the DC comics as Joker's sidekick and later on became his girlfriend. Aside from the "Suicide Squad," Robbie also starred in "The Legend of Tarzan," where she played the role of Jane. She also joined Will Smith in last year's movie "Focus."
Meanwhile, if "Harley Quinn" spinoff movie will materialize, DC Comics has plenty of strong female characters who can co- star with Harley Quinn, or at least make an appearance in the movie. Aside from those earlier mentioned, there is Poison Ivy, Bumblebee and fellow Suicide Squad colleague, Katana. Since each character has developed a sizeable following among the female readers, it would be safe to say that the future spinoff will be a hit.
