‘Pokemon Go’ Latest News & Update: Game Not Compatible With Nintendo Switch; Developer Teases ‘Pokemon Sun And Moon’ Crossover

With the recent unveiling of the highly mobile Nintendo Switch, some players may have speculated that developers will include "Pokemon Go" to the console's list of games. However, early reviews highlighted several technical issues that would make Niantic's game incompatible with the device.

Niantic's mobile gaming app "Pokemon Go" may seem like a perfect game for the new Nintendo Switch given the said console's focus on mobility. Nintendo's preview trailer featured several scenarios where gamers can bring the Switch with them by attaching controllers to the screen's sides.

"Pokemon Go" has a similar mantra of getting players to move and explore their neighborhoods. Catching Pokemon creatures using the Nintendo Switch may seem like a viable gaming option, however, the device may not fit the mobile app's gameplay requirements.

A game review posted on Forbes highlighted several technical challenges such as Niantic's mobile app needing cellular network access for constant GPS functionality. Nintendo developers may have added a wifi connectivity feature to the Switch, however, it will not be sufficient to support the map and tracking features that "Pokemon Go" needs.

At this time, it is also unclear whether the Nintendo Switch has a touchscreen monitor or a camera. The two features are key "Pokemon Go" gameplay elements that allows players to enjoy a Pokemon trainer experience.

Niantic's mobile gaming app may not make it to Nintendo Switch but "Pokemon Sun and Moon" developers are exploring a potential "Pokemon Go" crossover. In an interview with Gamespot, game producer Junichi Masuda shared that they crossover idea was something that they initially discussed. Still in its infancy stage, it is unclear whether developers will proceed with the said project.

With the upcoming release of "Pokemon Sun and Moon," Masuda indicated that it may take some time before they start a new project. The game producer stated, "First, we just want people to enjoy Sun and Moon after they come out, then we'll keep working on ideas to best accomplish that."

"Pokemon Go" was released in July while "Pokemon Sun and Moon" is slated to hit gaming shelves on Nov. 18 for the Nintendo 3DS. Learn more about "Pokemon Go's" new catch bonus in the clip below:
