"The Mummy" Release Date, News & Update: Brendan Fraser Out, Tom Cruise In?

Tom Cruise headlines the most anticipated movie come 2017 - "The Mummy". The first full-length of the trailer was released last December 4 hyping up the fans as it showed Cruise leading the star-studded cast into the world of gods and monsters. This launch offered a refreshing look on the well-known Mummy franchise.

Brendan Fraser will not be headlining this movie because this is Universal's retelling of the legendary Universal Monsters films which starts with "The Mummy". Instead of Fraser, moviegoers will witness the dangerous expedition of Tom Cruise's character Nick Morton in stopping the vengeful mummy Egyptian Princess played by Sofia Boutella.

According to EW , "Cruise leads an all-start cast in "The Mummy" including Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson) and Russel Crowe, who previously won an Oscar for Ridley Scott's Gladiator." With this powerful ensemble, no wonder this movie is on the bucketlist for 2017 movies.

The Verge said that, "It is a new take on the classic Universal Studios "The Mummy" franchise. It doesn't in any fashion involve Brendan Fraser, but instead stars Tom Cruise as a military leader trying to stop the mummy." So Fraser's fans no need to be saddened of him being replaced.

Also, the movie's plot is a combination of horror elements and action-adventure movie.Apparently, this won't be the last movie since it is a franchise.

How will Universal connect the subsequent movies then? The answer lies with Russell Crowe's character because he will play as the version of the famed Dr. Jekyll who is a member of the mythical monster hunters in this movie.

"The Mummy" will heat up theaters on June 9, 2017. Viewers will see a whole new Tom Cruise saving the world from gods and monsters.
