'Gotham City Sirens': Margot Robbie Back As Harley Quinn

Despite the scathing reviews thrown against "Suicide Squad," fans cannot deny their love for Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn. Her character is reportedly getting a spinoff film entitled "Gotham City Sirens." David Ayer is also making a return to helm the movie. Warner Bros. loved the idea since Robbie's performance was well-met by fans. The film also grabbed more than $700 million from the box office   .

According to The Hollywood Reporter (via The Verge), "Gotham City Sirens" will get the story from a 2009 DC series with the equivalent name. The story has Harley Quinn team up with Poison Ivy and Catwoman and features some of their hijinks while working to help each other out. The series was written by Paul Dini, who also worked on "Batman: The Animate Series." The upcoming movie will see David Ayer working with Margot Robbie all over again. The film's screenplay will apparently be handled by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who also wrote the scripts for "Sherlock Holmes 3" and a remake of "Tomb Raider."

Polygon reports that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was one of 2016's "breakout comic book characters." They also believe that "Gotham City Sirens" is not currently a "household name" like Iron Man and Spider-Man. However, the inclusion of Catwoman and Poison Ivy helps introduce more characters to the DC cinematic universe. They also speculate that the two characters will most likely get future appearances in other DC movies.

Prior to the "Gotham City Sirens" series getting published in 2009, Warner Bros. Animation made a flash-animated web series called "Gotham Girls." The collaboration with Noodle Soup Productions lasted three seasons with 10 episodes each. The show featured Harley Quinn, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Zatanna and Catwoman. The show reportedly inspired a five-issue comic book series in 2003. The upcoming film appears to get the most out of Margot Robbie's successful portrayal of the Harley Quinn.
