Xbox One VS PS4: Indie Dev Says Microsoft's Console is 'Easily The Most Appealing' Platform

Roundabout Developer No Goblin Praises Xbox One as 'the Most Appealing Console Platform for Developers Like Us'

There's been a lot of back and forth between the respective new console, and from developers to gamers, everyone has an opinion on whether Sony's PlayStation 4 or Microsoft's Xbox One is the next-gen top dog. While indie developers have seemed to show a tendency to prefer the PS4 over the Xbox One, it seems like they're not all of the same mindset.

You may have heard about Roundabout developer No Goblin, or maybe you haven't, but the studio is quite up front about which console they prefer. NowGamer is reporting that the developer is praising the console, saying it's "easily the most appealing console platform for developers like us to release on."

"A huge thanks has to go to Chris Charla and Richard Rouse over at the ID@Xbox team for making what’s easily the most appealing console platform for developers like us to release on," reads a recent posting on the developer's blog.

"Diving into the Xbox One universe has been super easy for us, and Chris and Richard have been incredibly responsive and helpful in dealing with all of my old man game developer quirks. Personally, I think ID@Xbox is going to take a lot of people by surprise. We’re super honored to be included with one of the first waves of developers to release through the program."

Before the console's release, Microsoft had something of an anti-indie policy, declaring that if developers wanted to get their game(s) on the Xbox One, then the developer had no choice but to go through Microsoft Studios or a third-party publisher, undermining the whole idea of being "indie" in the first place. Microsoft eventually changed this policy, but it left a lot of industry folks with a pretty sour taste in their mouths. Let's hope that No Goblin's praise is indicative of greener pastures.

Under the hood, Microsoft's Xbox One claims an 8-core x86 processor and Microsoft hopes it will take the place of the family room cable box by letting you watch Blu-ray movies and TV through the console, in a "seamless transition" that lets players switch from playing games to watching shows and/or movies. It will come fully loaded with 8GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive.

The console's exclusives include Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Ryse: Son of Rome, and more. You can check out a list of the install sizes for all of the launch games here. The Xbox One retails for $499.

In the opposite corner, the PlayStation 4 boasts Supercharged PC architecture, X86 CPU, Enhanced PC GPU, and 8GB Unified Memory according to the official specs.

It supports the same PlayStation Plus service as the Vita and PlayStation 3. However, a Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer games, but not for additional media services like Netflix. Sony has also updated the Dual Shock controllers with a touch screen and improved shoulder triggers, and bundles the console with a headset.

Available titles for the system include Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun, and more. You can check out a complete list of launch titles' prices and install sizes here. It currently retails for $399.
