Overwatch 2: Mauga's Going Down, Confirmed to Get 'Harsh Nerfs' Soon

Players who have been using Mauga in Overwatch 2 extensively since his release may have to brace themselves. It is no surprise that the new tank hero is overpowered and that nerfs are indeed coming. But what is surprising is that Mauga is going to receive "harsher nerfs," and this came from no less than the game's Lead Hero Designer, Alec Dawson.

Harsh Nerfs Incoming

Those who have been using Mauga ever since he got introduced to the Overwatch 2 roster know that he is just too overpowered. In fact, some players were able to climb from the lowest tier in Ranked all the way to the upper echelons of competitive play with relative ease.

Casual players might not survive the onslaught that comes their way, but in the hands of a pro, Mauga is virtually unbeatable. His passive ability alone grants him life as he lands critical hits to the enemy. This is not hard to do because Mauga can just spray his enemies with "Gunny" and then end them with "Cha-Cha." Despite Mauga's rise to prominence in the recent weeks, it seems that he is going down hard very soon.

Dawson said in a recent tweet that the Overwatch 2 team is targeting to release an update early next week. He added that players can expect some "harsher" changes, which will affect Mauga's survivability, ammo economy, and more.

The Overwatch 2 development team was supposed to implement a hotfix before the Holiday break, but that did not happen due to some "recent technical issues" that Dawson did not elaborate on.

It's About Time

So how did the Overwatch 2 community, particularly those who love using Mauga, react to the upcoming nerfs to the beloved tank hero? The general sentiment looks quite positive. In fact, it can be summed up as "it's about time."

Mauga has been so powerful for quite a while that some adjustments have to be made in order to maintain the balance of the game. Over on X/Twitter, user Minhinks jokingly shared that if the enemy team does not have a Mauga, then they will not choose Mauga, and everyone is going to have a good time since there are no overpowered heroes in that match.

Another user is more serious and candid with their reaction. They said that Mauga is just too awful to go against because he can heal whatever damage he has sustained during an encounter and be fine shortly after.

User BrettleyOP said that the Overwatch 2 team also has to look at the other tank heroes in the game and make suitable changes to make them viable. At the moment, other tanks like Reinhardt or Junker Queen do not deal a significant amount of damage to make a difference on the battlefield. Some of them do not even have enough sustain similar to Mauga's passive ability. Mauga just made these issues so blatantly obvious that they are now impossible to ignore.

Now, it remains to be seen how harsh the incoming nerfs really are. But, it is nice to know that some parity might be felt when the game's next update comes in the near future.

So, what can you say about Mauga's incoming nerfs? Do you think that they are justified or is the tank hero just fine in the current meta?
