‘The Mummy Reboot’ Release Date News & Updates: Film Reboot Paves The Way For Monster Film Cinematic Universe?

With the term Cinematic Universe becoming a household name these days, it's not that surprising to hear plans from Universal Studios as they seem to be on the way of making their own version of a shared cinematic universe with their monster films. It starts with the upcoming reboot of "The Mummy."

"The Mummy" is an upcoming American action adventure horror film directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by John Sphalts and Chistopher McQuarrie. It is a reboot of the film franchise and the first installment of what is dubbed as Universal Monsters shared universe. The upcoming movie features Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe.

There has been little to no details in terms of te storylines let alone the in depth plot details. However, thanks to a few released trailers for the upcoming film and the hints dropped by film director Alex Kurtzman, fans get to know some pieces about the movie. In fact he shares some details on how the movie was conceptualized. It turns out "X'men Days of Future Past" was crucial in giving him ideas on how to put his own spin on the upcoming reboot of "The Mummy."

Speaking of these changes, in an interview with Cinemablend, the director says that Apocalypse from "X-men" franchise had the same design for what he intended as his version for "The Mummy." In addition to the style chang,e the upcoming rebooted version will feature a woman to further differentiate it from the previous adaptation.

This reboot of "The Mummy" further distances itself from earlier films by casting Tom Cruise not as as an Archeologist but a military leader (Nick Morton) trying to stopped an evil mummy (Sofia Boutella) from destroying London. The rest of the plot is still on the wraps. Other notable cast members includes Annabelle Wallis (Jenny Halsey), Jake Johnson (Sergeant Vail), Courtney B. Vance (Gildeon Forster), Russell Crowe (Dr. Henry Jeky) and much more. The film is expected to be released on June 9, 2017.

With that said the upcoming reboot of "The Mummy" will be part of a series of films for Universal Studios that they cooked up for a monster shared universe under titles include "Frankenstein's Monster," "Dracula," The Wolf Man," "Creature from the Black Lagoon," "Bride of Frankenstein," and "The Invisible Man." Now That the door has been opened, fans can expect these films to possibly return to the big screen in the future.
